STOP two/FIVE
Goebel Park is best known for its 100 foot tall German gothic bell Tower.
when in working condition, the tower displays a charming mechanical puppet show of the “Pied Piper of Hamelin”.
DID YOU KNOW?
- As the story goes… In the 13th century, a piper promises to rid the German town Hamelin of a rat infestation. The mayor promises him money if he succeeds. He does, but the town now refuses to pay him. As revenge, he hypnotizes the town’s children with his music and leads them away, never to be seen again.
- Completed in 1979, the Carroll Chimes Bell Tower has been an iconic location in Covington for over 40 years.
- The clock tower’s much needed repairs are scheduled to begin in August, and focus on the main structure. Future phases will tackle fixes to the chimes, puppets, glockenspiel and other internal parts.
- The word glockenspiel (besides being super fun to say!) comes from the German language and means “to play the bells.” The instrument resembles a small xylophone, but it is actually made of steel bars.
